Delinquent Taxes

Dates on postmarked are honored as payment dates in order to avoid penalty & interest.

There is a 2% penalty and 5/6 of 1% of interest accumulated monthly to all delinquent taxes.

Each August 1, all real estate properties with delinquent taxes from the year prior have a lien placed against the property. These liens are available for sale to the general public. Tax liens may allow for the assignee ( owner of the lien) to acquire ownership of the land.

Please contact The Carter County Treasurers Office for more information about liens, tax lien sales, and tax deeds.

Delinquent Mobile Home and Personal Property Taxes are subject to laws which require that a writ of execution be delivered to the Carter County Sheriff. The Sheriff may, in accordance with law, seize and sell personal property in order to pay the delinquent taxes. Writs for delinquent personal property taxes are executed in the fall, and writs for delinquent mobile home taxes are executed in the spring.
